Producer

Birgit’s winemaking family tradition stretches back to 1632. She farms 22 hectares in the Burgenland – near the shores of lake Neusiedl, where she grows a selection of Austrian usual grape varieties as well some international ones always following biodynamic principles. The soils are tremendously complex with gneiss, mica, slate, chalky limestone, marl and clay all to be found accross her vineyards. Since 2008 Birgit has worked with the only woman cellar master in Burgenland, Adriana Gonzalez, Galician by birth but widely travelled and happily settled in the Austria. All wines are naturally fermented, and bottled unfined and unfiltered with only small sulphur additions. The Blaufränkisch Heide comes from Birgit’s best site on Leithaberg, a southeast-facing slope on calcareous soil. It’s also vinified with a short maceration and aged in different sized old oak barrels.
