Just twenty kilometres from St Emilion is Montravel, an appellation in AOC Bergerac. The Deffarge Danger family have been creating exquisite wines here with Bordeaux varieties since 1749 and, simply because of where they are, their wines are absurdly good value for money.
Their soils are perfect for producing rich Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec on their clay/limestone slopes and then high on a plateau, they grow their whites - Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle - and Sylvie and Jean-Francois Deffarge are exceptionally good at getting the most out of these grapes.
